Calendar 2011 - Digital scrapbooking

Decided to begin a new flair in Digital scrapbooking as I do not have space for my traditional scrapbooking supplies. Some of my embellishments are locked up in suitcases and it sucks not to have my creative juices flowing in my hands, however Iv compromised on that by taking up digital scrapbooking with my scrapbooking software which is such an awesome software!

Uploading the pages of my calendar, 3 at a time, as it cant handle uploading 5 at a time.. Bare with me if this post takes up 4 different posts.. Lol!

Calendar of Memories for my mum

Past few days I've been thinking of doing some scrapbooking but i din't know what to make, until this idea popped in my head! Thought of making a calendar for my mum with as many photos of me and her sister's family so that each month she sees us through the DESKTOP calendar, from miles away!

So far i've had so much with adding Bling to my pages either through Stickles, Rhinestones or Glitter Gel Pens for the metallic effect..

Here's what i've done so far.. Wanna complete this sooooooooooooooon, so that she could use this at her school desk, and miss meeeeeeeeeee! Hahaha!

The two images below show the comparison between what i initially made, and the modified November month with some catchy * Bling * , look below u'll see the improvements for November!

For December - since I used the DCWV Pearlescent metallic paper, I added minimal amount of Bling, so that the ribbon gives a nice touch to the page!

Using Vellum Paper with printed Christmas tree

This was an easy card, where i printed the image on vellum paper,and then embellished the tree with STAMPENDOUS Fun Flock (Orange n Purple), Liquid Pearls - White and Gold glitter on the star.. and used some scraps to add the "Merry Christmas" note!

This was in the Greenhouse of Niagara Falls Conservation Park.. We couldnt miss taking a snap with all the lively plants! The photo represented season of SPRING, and it is removable as it is attached on top of the acrylic while the page is seen from underneath!! This gives me the flexibility to use Dry Erase marker on the dates for jotting down important events!

The photos on my front page, are the good times in Sri Lanka in Jan 2009 and at the campus of Harvard University with Nuwa n mum.. As the saying goes - A New year always gives you a chance for a new beginning! I denoted this with my title - "NEW YEAR begins a NEW START"

Highlighted the photos with a Green frame and raised the frame with these images on pop-dots.. Added some bling with Rhinestones, leftover swirls and a Green Satin Basic Grey fiber..

Recycled the scrap pieces of swirls, and poppy flower from Canada's REMEMBRANCE DAY for this layout.. Used a Basic Grey GLAZED brad to attach the black MakingMemories SABRINA Flower to the Poppy..

The letters were made from Sizzix 'WINGO ZINGO Alphabet' die with Basic Grey 'GRANOLA' paper pad, and I embossed these letters with a CLEAR GLAZE pen..

'Hairdo'

Well this layout is about how my hairstyles have changed over the past 1 year, commencing from Dec 2008 till now!

Quite a big change.. especially now that I just got my new highlights done! Woo hooo!

In this layout, I managed to use 11 labels, the biggest amount i've ever ever used for a layout!! Added some bling, with a catchy Glitter title - 'Hairdo' and glittered butterfly stickers which aren't so clear in this photo - please click on the photo so it zooms up..

This is a random card I made when I tried out using my new stash of FLOCK for the fuzzy velvet texture.. Turned out well, I guess, so I filled in the white space with colours and swirls..

Teaching has been my favourite activity during this season. Taught Junior Kindergarten kids about Halloween and the warm colours of FALL!

I quite liked the houndstooth paper.. But to outline it, i attached the ribbon arnd the edges so that there is a distinction in the layout..

Our day at DC and Philly was sooo hectic.. We went to 7places within a day! Barely 5mins for a breakfast stopover too.. and Lunch stopover at Maryland was a much needed break..

This is our first weekend away (1-3rd Aug 2009) to show mum how the countryside looks, compared to Sri Lanka and England.. To me Waterloo reminded me of the outskirts of Christchurch and Scottish highlands.. So quiet and calm.. However, Aamish community doesnt exist in Christchurch, haha! Therefore this culture strongly exists in Waterloo which is located about 2hrs away from Toronto.. I had a relaxing weekend with my book and full clothed sunbathing (sadly cudnt be in a Bikini).. haha!

Took the vintage theme for these layouts..

Got just Washington DC andPenns Cave to complete before i send the album to mum.. this is my most cherished gift to her.. Hope she'd like this album.. I totally enjoyed distressing and inking the edges of the papers in the layouts..

Whereas in the New York layout - just above... I used two different papers for the middle portion, just to highlight the water excitement of the cruise ride to see Statue of Liberty, and the other pink vintage paper to match with the background from Madame Tussauds museum.. Journalled a whole heap of details on the tags and pinned them in with large brads.. First time i used them, haha.. cos I hardly get the chance to use big items!

I sanded the Letter Thickers and inked the letters for the old worn out effect on the title - BOSTON.

Week 12 - nearly caught up till wk 13 for the contest..phew!

Instd of having the backgrnd colourful with the photos, and giving a headache to the viewer! Made half of this ovrnite, til 4am.. as i was too engrossed..

This was a fun layout i made.. becoz i made a guitar, an origami box in which i put my journal tags..plus i made a blue tulip on which i put FUN with liquid pearls.. The title LATIN FEST was spread arnd edges of the box..Made a Drum to resemble one of those used by the Samba band, drumsticks were toothpicks with brown ink n glue on one end.. The photos r of the samba band which i enjoyed listening to, then at another stall they had free dance displays where ppl just walk up n dance.. it was fun getting inspired by them.. Wish mum was with me, as she n i used to attend dance classes for 4months in Lanka! Those were the fun times back at home! I guess its time for us to brush up our dancing..since shes now here in Canada..

Colour is everywhere. It heightens our senses, affects our moods, and has even been said to define our personalities. Cultures around the world strongly associate colours with various themes, omens, and rites of passage. In North America, for example, black has long been associated with death, while white is believed to signify life and purity. In Asia, however, white is the traditional colour of mourning. In North America, black has also come to suggest sophistication and formality. We associate trust and stability with the colour blue, while people of Korean descent associate these same virtues with the colour pink. So, around the world, our associations with colour are as varied and as diverse as the colour wheel itself.

With regards to our health, specific colours are thought to have different effects on people and on the healing and treatment of various disorders. Colour and light therapies have been dated back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and Asia and have recently been gaining popularity as a method of treating S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Here is a brief list of what colours are typically associated with what emotions, moods, and therapies:

Black: self-confidence, power, and strength
Blue: calming, lowers blood pressure, decreases respiration
Green: soothing, relaxing mentally as well as physically, helps those suffering from depression, anxiety, nervousness
Violet: suppresses appetite, provides a peaceful environment, good for migraines
Pink: used in diet therapy as an appetite suppressant, relaxes muscles, relieves tension, and is soothing
Yellow: energizes, relieves depression, improves memory, and stimulates appetite
Orange: energizes, stimulates appetite and digestive system
Red: stimulates brain wave activity, increases heart rate, respirations and blood pressure

With regards to design, colour is considered one of the most useful and powerful tools one has to work with. As artists, we respond to colours in different ways, and these responses take place on a subconscious, emotional level. We also use colour to help us tell our stories. Most of us have strong colour preferences and gravitate again and again to a similar palette. It is a BIG challenge for many of us to step outside of our comfort zones and work with “different” colours. For the purpose of this article, we are featuring four different layouts—each with a very different colour theme.

This study of colour could go on and on…it is a most interesting topic and we were actually quite amazed at how the things we read about colour really made “sense.” Our moods are affected by colour, they do evoke certain emotions and memories, and they can dictate some behavior. In closing, we challenge you to take a colour (or a group of colours) that you typically shy away from, and create a project based around it. Or, do what we did and create a monochromatic layout that focuses almost entirely on one colour or shade. Have fun!
